i have some experience, but haven't done it in a while. As I remember, you
unpack the tarball, and run ./setiathome -login to get an account setup.
The default is to download a new work unit after the last is processed,
but you can turn that off.

putting it in the background should be enough: setiathome &
other options are in the readme file. i use it this way:
setiathome -nice 19 -graphics &
the -graphics turns on the ability to show that fancy progress graph, but
it is experimental.
the freebsd port was nice enough to include a start-stop script that will
start it as a low-priv. user at boot. if you want that, let me know and
i'll email it to you.
