There's always "viper" mode - where you can make emacs emulate 'vi'
keystrokes. Of course, IMNSHO that's kind of like taking a Mercedes
body and putting a Yugo engine in it... :)

I agree that emacs is not always the best solution. I use to love emacs
and used it for everything, then went through a phase in my career where
I was doing a lot of sysadmin'ing on a lot of different machines, none
of which of course had emacs pre-installed and configured on them, so I
got back into using 'vi' almost exclusively. When I moved back into a
more development-type role, and could do most of my work either on my
workstation or at my laptop, I went through the time and effort of
installing xemacs and customizing it for my working style and have never
looked back.

If you have a single machine on which you are able to do most of your
work, so you don't waste time configuring it and then not having access
to it, then emacs is a really really powerful environment in which to
work.

What you mean "almost"? :)
