There's a tool called "xvidtune" but BE CAREFUL WITH IT. It's capable
of setting your video card to do things to your monitor that it can't
handle. Under most normal situations (99.95% of the time) it works
as-advertised, but fool around with it and you can potentially damage
your monitor.
Now that that's out of the way - you can use xvidtune to adjust the
modeline settings of the mode X uses to drive your monitor. X isn't as
"smart" as Windows is because X lets you adjust all the various screen
refresh settings by hand exactly the way you want rather than assuming
it knows what's best for your monitor. (can you tell that's sarcasm?
:) You'll need to tweak the display values in xvidtune then copy those
settings into your XF86Config file.
It's not for the faint-of-heart, or someone not comfortable editing
system files, but that's how it's done.
