_If_ the test worked, then you probably have more than one screen
resolution that X is capable of. I believe there is a keystroke you can
use to change the resolution "on the fly". Something like Ctrl-Alt-Plus
and Ctrl-Alt-Minus. The problem is that your "default" resolution is
probably 640x480. Check XF86Setup again, and see if there isn't a way to
set 800x600 as your _default_ resolution.
