Jim,
        That would be "Signal 15" (most likely) and generally that
means he has stumbled upon a bonafide hardware problem ...
nearly always in the ram.
        He could try moving his ram around or he could grab a copy
of memtest86 off freshmeat.net, make a bootable diskette
from it and take a good look at his ram before re-arranging
the green things in his wallet. But most likely he will end
up buying some fresh ram at some really great prices.
