[SLUG] Why does my smbd fail to start

I've rebuilt my Linux Slackware server, have loaded samba and am trying to
get it running. I used swat to generate a configuration file based on a past
successful file. My trouble right now seems to be that smbd won't run. nmbd
does and I can see, but not access, the server from winboxen.

ps ax just doesn't list an smbd process even though swat says its running.

I've issued the command: /usr/sbin/smbd
No dice.

What am I missing??
