Well, it's right. It's not in gzip format, but bzip2 format. The compression
algorithm is different (according the man page) and is more efficient. Recent
Linux kernels come in both bzip2 and gzip formats, and you can see the
difference between the two is large: on the order of several megabytes.

So, you'd just do a bunzip2 filename.bz2, then untar like usual...
