I just got my scanner to work so I will try to remember what I did.
Check /etc/sane.d for the epson.conf file. uncomment the #usb
/dev/usb/scanner0 line. I had to link the firmware file before it would
work. I copied the file from my W95 /system file into /var? . See
http://snapscan.sourceforge.net/#supported for something similar. I use
the snapscan, but you may use something different.
xsane works good, but Kooka is simpler
Do you know how to get my digital camera to work?
