I've been using Debian for years and the installs are pretty easy now,
so I don't know exactly what your problem is, but it does sound like you
are using a dial up connection to download things, and I somehow feel
you have the Debian Net Install CD. You'll either need a live internet
connection or at the least have your modem and ppp set up and working,
as the base install leaves you just to the point where you have to
download pretty much everything. I personally wouldn't do a net install
by modem.
Talking about distros, puppy linux is pretty cool and runs well on
machines of lesser ability. I wouldn't use it for commercial
applications and I don't even know if they offer mysql integration for
you, but it is pretty cool to play around with.
