What could cause this?

I did a "find /lib -type f -size 0 -print0 | xargs -0 --no-run-if-empty ls -lb"
and nothing was found. If restarting fixes it, dandy, but if it
doesn't I could wind up screwed.
Now sounds like a good time to disable the nightly backup. As I still don't
know which of HD#1, HD#2 or IDE controller is bad (I've gotten no errors),
I'll replace the cheapest and easiest of them -- the IDE controller -- and
move HD#[12] to /dev/hd[ef], I guess. Or maybe just HD#2, if that's OK with
the system.
