I run Cat 6 Home Run from the NID to the DSL Jack ( DSL split at the NID)
Then Cat 5 with rj11 ends on it to go from the jack to the modem. Cat5 has
been he standard for the telecos for years now. If they were to install a
jack in the last 8 years it should be some form of cat 5 twisted pair.
Verizon even ran cat 5 from the nid to the junction box down the street
withere it meets up with 22 guage waire that head back to the co.
Here is the general concept between a all cat 5 run.
>From NID to JACK to MODEM , it helps with you sync and noise numbers which
means if you have good enough numbers you can have Verizon or who ever
controls the dslam circut to change you from Interleaved (default mode from
VZ) to FastPath. The primary different is that Interleaved has error
correction in the protocol which adds to latceny of the connection and fast
path does not. The cat 5 deal is all about your signal and noise margins
also the better your stats on interleave the less likely you are to get
malformed
packets from the dslam and as long as the modem does not have to keep
re-requesting packets because of your noise margin the better your thoughput
will be.
