Why not use partimage (ghost\drive image clone)? DD copies free blocks
and is not very user friendly.
download a copy of SystemRescueCD @ http://www.sysresccd.org/
there is a nice bootable ISO that has tons of tools like Qparted
(http://www.sysresccd.org/System-tools)
