Compaq earned it's reputation as fast by being nonstandard in memory access.
Maybe this has the same nonstandard solution.
I'd disconnect all cards, even try different RAM to see if you can get the
install going. Then reinsert each card (and try to reinstall) until problem
reoccurs. This may reveal where the problem lies. At least you'd know what to
address.
BTW, I have a laptop (Compaq Presario 266x64MB) which did every RH since 4.2
(I think) to 7.3 just fine.
